What is VIG?
Video Interaction Guidance uses short video clips of you and your child doing something familiar, such as playing or getting ready. You watch selected moments with a trained practitioner, notice what is going well and explore how to build on it together.
- For
- Parents and carers of young children, particularly in the early years
- Where
- Usually your home or a community space
- How long
- Typically three to four cycles
How does VIG work?
You start by talking about what matters to you. The work then follows a cycle of recording and looking at selected moments together.
Talk about your hopes
You and the practitioner agree what you’d like to work on. A question such as “What would you like to be happening between you and your child?” helps guide the sessions.
Record an everyday moment
The practitioner films around 10–15 minutes of a familiar activity, such as playtime, mealtime or getting ready, in a comfortable setting.
Notice what works, together
At a follow-up session, you watch a few clips the practitioner has selected to show positive moments. You talk about what you notice, how your child responds and small steps you’d like to build on.
Who is VIG for?
At Find A Way, VIG supports parents and carers of young children, particularly in the early years. You might want to explore it if:
- You feel unsure, overwhelmed or less connected with your child.
- Communication or everyday routines feel difficult.
- You’re rebuilding your relationship after separation, family stress or safeguarding concerns.
- You have concerns about your child’s development, emotions or behaviour, or are awaiting an assessment.
VIG can also sit alongside other support your family receives. We can talk with you about whether it would be a helpful fit.
What can you work on?
The focus is on your strengths and the moments of connection that are already there. Together, you can explore:
- Recognising your child’s communication and emotional needs.
- Noticing what you do that helps a positive moment happen.
- Finding small ways to build confidence and connection in everyday life.
How to get started
Families can contact us directly; you don’t need a professional referral. We can talk with you about whether VIG is right for your family.
For professionals
We also accept referrals from professionals working with families, including family support workers, health visitors, social workers, school staff and community organisations. Get in touch to request a referral form or an informal consultation about how VIG could fit alongside a family’s existing support.
